Net zero by 2040
Here at The Howard de Walden Estate, we are committed to being a net zero business by 2040.
To achieve this, we have set a science-based target, which requires a minimum of a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and reductions of more than 95% across Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
Although a challenging target, we are committed to investing in improvements across our portfolio that deliver lasting and demonstrable value to the Estate, our business and our stakeholders.
In our efforts to decarbonise our managed portfolio, we are pleased to have recently started working with Verco who will support us by delivering a number of net zero carbon assessments across our four portfolios. Verco is a trusted net zero advisor across the real estate sector and has extensive experience of delivering net zero audit programmes.
Verco will help us assess 13 properties against our net zero carbon target, spanning commercial offices, retail and healthcare – providing detailed, building-specific recommendations and improvements. As many of our buildings are listed, there are unique challenges that come with this process. However, we see a significant opportunity with this partnership to ensure our buildings are prepared for decarbonisation and where possible, align to meet recognised industry standards for net zero carbon. The programme of work also includes extensive occupier engagement and integrating recommendations with the long-term- asset management plan for each building.
Simon Tranter, Head of Sustainability at The Howard de Walden Estate, said: “We take our road to net zero extremely seriously and are committed to achieving our aims. Our work with Verco will help to accelerate our progress and facilitate us to identify, change and implement strategies to reduce carbon across our portfolio.”
Andries van der Walt, Director at Verco said: “With 2030 now only a few budget planning cycles away, this programme of net zero building assessments will provide the team at The Howard de Walden Estate with the critical insights and recommended interventions they need to decarbonise their portfolio and deliver on their net zero commitments. Verco are proud to have been selected as technical partner supporting Howard de Walden in this journey.”
