Thayer Street redevelopment

The Howard de Walden Estate and Knight Harwood carried out a topping out ceremony for our development project on Thayer Street and Marylebone Lane.

The practice of "topping out" can be traced back to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction.

Our Executive Property Director, Julian Best and Director of Knight Harwood, Oliver Driscoll completed the cementing of the five-storey building.

Julian commented; "I'm excited about this project which is part of our ongoing transformation of Marylebone Lane and Thayer Street. We continually strive to improve our buildings and make sure they are fit for purpose for future generations. Working with Knight Harwood continues to be a rewarding experience and I'm confident this development is one we will be proud of."

The space is 26,000 sq ft in total and is to be used as retail and commercial space in the heart of Marylebone Village. Completion of the project is scheduled for autumn 2023.

Key statistics from the project:

  • 99.95 - the percentage of waste that was recycled
  • 50,000 - the number of hours worked
  • 260 tonnes of steel used
  • 1,100 meters cubed of concrete used
  • "Excellent" - the BREEAM sustainability rating
  • "Excellent"- the score awarded to Knight Harwood as Considerate Constructors
