Sustainable Fit-Out: Guidance for Occupiers Now Available
Supporting sustainable fit-out projects across our estate.
A sustainable fit-out can deliver significant benefits for occupiers, from reducing operational costs and improving resource efficiency to creating healthier, more productive workplaces. Decisions made during the design and refurbishment process can have a lasting impact on the environmental performance, resilience and running costs of a space.
To support our occupiers in making informed, sustainable choices, we are pleased to launch our new document, the Sustainable Fit-Out: Guidance for Occupiers. This practical resource is designed to help occupiers embed sustainability throughout the design, delivery and operation of their spaces across our estate.
The guidance translates sustainability principles into clear, actionable measures that can be applied throughout the refurbishment journey, from initial concept design through to construction, handover and occupation. It is structured around five key sustainability principles:
- Energy & Carbon
- Circular Economy
- Nature & Biodiversity
- Health & Wellbeing
- Climate Adaptation
By considering these principles from the outset, project teams can make better-informed decisions that support long-term performance, reduce waste, improve workplace wellbeing and enhance the overall environmental quality of their spaces.
The guidance will be introduced at the earliest stages of discussions with new occupiers and included as part of the Licence for Alterations process, ensuring sustainability is considered before key design, and specification decisions are finalised.
A key part of our deCarbon strategy and ambition to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2040 is working collaboratively with local communities, businesses and residents to create meaningful change for a more sustainable future. Fit-out projects present a significant opportunity to influence both embodied carbon and long-term operational performance, making them an important part of this journey.
By working together, we can create more efficient, resilient and sustainable spaces that deliver positive outcomes for occupiers, the estate and the wider community.
