A day out in Marylebone Lane

@mylondonfairytales explores the hidden gems of one of Marylebone Village’s most atmospheric streets

There’s always something to do and to see in London, but it can feel overwhelming sometimes. That’s why I love to escape to the little villages that give this city so much personality and make it feel more approachable and homey.

Recently I had the opportunity to explore Marylebone Village for a day—a sleek neighbourhood with a lot to offer, from a luxurious hotel to high-end jewellery boutiques, a fashion store, a family-owned sandwich shop and a store with artisan products.

I spent most of my time on Marylebone Lane, quieter than the high street but a lot more charming and with fantastic places to shop and eat. After a short walk from Bond Street tube station to Marylebone Village, this is how I spent my day on Marylebone Lane!

108 Pantry
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so of course I had to start my journey in Marylebone Village by having a light breakfast at 108 Pantry in the Marylebone Hotel. This is the perfect place for you if you love light options, modern British cuisine, homemade cakes and pastries alongside fresh juices and smoothies as well as a well-deserved cup of coffee or tea!

Alongside 108 Pantry, you have 108 Brasserie, which offers you an uncomplicated menu with beautifully cooked dishes with the freshest ingredients and if you feel like having a drink, why not relax and enjoy a cocktail at the stylish bar!

Kabiri
After breakfast, it was time for a bit of shopping and if high-end jewellery is your thing, this is where you should go. Kabiri, based at 94 Marylebone Lane since 2015, is a boutique known for quality and exceptional design. With a layout that looks very much like a gallery, you can see through the glass cases a curated selection of work from various designers—from sleek and clean to eccentric models, every piece has a story behind. I have to say, I fell in love with most of the pieces, so exquisite!

Dinny Hall
Only a few steps ahead, you can find another premium jewellery boutique. After more than 30 years, Dinny Hall is still the creative soul of this beautiful brand. Personally involved in every single step of creating her pieces, the designer has made a name for herself in the jewellery world with their dainty creations.

In this boutique, located at 66 Marylebone Lane, you can find beautiful pieces to wear on an everyday basis or special occasions. The hoops, perfectly designed, are the best sellers, but the necklaces, rings and delicate bracelets don’t disappoint as if you want your own version, you can have them bespoke. Once you go in, it will be difficult to leave empty-handed!

KJ’s Laundry
After jewellery shopping, you need something to wear it with, so why not stop by KJ’s Laundry? In this eclectic independent boutique, co-owners Kate and Jane (see what they did there? KJ’s!) display a variety of luxury brands, you can find your new favourite dress, the most stylish hat, comfortable trainers and that handbag that goes with everything! From a relaxed look to something more appropriate to wear in an office or even on a night out, you have it all. The options are endless, and if you can’t make up your mind on what to wear, you can always get a delightfully smelling candle and a book.

The Coach Makers Arms
After a bit of shopping, it’s time for more food, and my lunch spot left me completely speechless, with delicious food and a gorgeous interior! Built 140 years ago, The Coach Makers Arms pub was originally an Inn for the area’s coach making craftsmen. Fast forward to the 21st century, this beautiful Georgian building is delighting its customers with an exquisite gastropub menu and fine interiors. Upstairs you can find the dining room, which is wide and has big windows, the tables are set and you can book a big table for groups! The food won us over, with seasonal veggies and great British produce. If you go for a drink, you can either have it at the bar in the ground floor or, if you feel like having something more exclusive, you can always pop down to The 72, a cosy but chic secret cocktail bar!

David Penton & Son
After a delicious lunch, there was more shopping to do! Next stop: Penton’s. Penton’s is a recognised unique premium hardware store that has been trading artisan products and tools for over 170 years, which makes it the oldest shop in Marylebone Lane! Can you believe it? This independent shop that is known for excellence in the quality of products and customer service, sells a wide range of tools, cleaning products, electrical and plumbing goods as well as hardware. There you can find everything that you need and didn’t even know that you needed! As I was browsing the shelves and stands, I discovered so many products and utensils I didn’t even know existed, genuinely life-changing!

Paul Rothe & Son
And because I’m always feeling peckish, my next stop had to be Paul Rothe & Son. This family-owned sandwich shop has been bringing smiles to its clients’ faces since it opened its doors in Marylebone Lane on 2nd August 1900. With German heritage, this quaint delicatessen, which is open from early morning, offers an immense selection of freshly made sandwiches with delicious spreads—one of the reasons why it gets so busy during lunchtime—as well as hot food, like their famous soups.

Displayed in the windows you can see an eclectic and extensive selection of jams, marmalades and condiments, but once you walk in, it’s like you are in the world of jam! Big jars, medium jars, tiny jars, all filled up with delicious spreads and condiments that will make any food lover rejoice.

It doesn’t surprise me that Paul Rothe & Son remains a favourite local haunt after so many years. The friendly service and delicious food are always present in this parlour and you are invited to go in even if it’s only for a coffee, but I doubt that you will leave without a few jars of jam and a couple of sandwiches!

28:50
After a fun day, there’s only one thing left to do—drinking wine at 28-50. If you are a wine lover, look no further: 28-50 is the place to enjoy a glass of your favourite region! If you don’t know much about wine or are unsure about what to drink, don’t worry, their sommeliers are there to help you!

This beautiful wine-focused bar and restaurant was my last stop of the day, where I went for a wine tasting. Between sparkling, red, white and rosé wine I got to know more about the wine producers, the regions and the flavours of each of the wines. Paired with the wine, you can enjoy a bistro-style menu with a selection of charcuterie, cheeses and burgers as well as a pre-theatre menu!

What a great way to end an already perfect day!

Other gems in Marylebone Village
As much as I love Marylebone Lane, I also enjoy browsing in the other streets of Marylebone Village, and here are some other favourites of mine:

1. Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street is one of my favourite bookshops in London with its oak gallery, skylight and rows and rows of books on every topic—definitely a must visit!

2. The Marylebone Florist, or Gainsborough Flowers, on Moxen Street is a treat for the eyes with its beautiful bouquets of flowers and plants displayed outside—I’m a fan!

3. And last but not least, often under the radar to a lot of London guides and tours, The Wallace Collection is definitely a must-see. This beautiful museum, with free admission to the public, is home to a vast and international collection of pieces of art, including sculpture, paintings, furniture, porcelain and arms and armour, which you can see displayed in the beautiful colourful rooms and Great Gallery. If you have time, make sure to stop by the courtyard, home of the Wallace Restaurant.

I had such a great day in Marylebone Village and with so many great places to spend my time, it will be difficult to stay away for long!
